The Lamborghini Sports Car

At the end of World War II Ferruccio Lamborghini satisfied his desire for fast cars by running the cars made by Fiat. Mr. Ferruccio Lamborghini himself ran a small machine shop at the time but gradually turned to the manufacture of tractors as the major effort and occupation of his enterprise and efforts.

Business went so went with the tractor trade and industrial empire that by the age of 60 Lamborghini turned his attention to his real love – building a car himself. It seemed that Ferruccio Lamborghini thought that with his talents he could design, develop and build a better automotive product that either Maserati or Ferrari.

The chassis was multi-tubular, the front mounted engine a 3.5 liter V12 with four overhead camshafts and six authentic Weber carburetors ; driving through the ubiquitous ZG five speed into a limited-slip rear-end it produced 360 horsepower and a coil and wishbone independent suspension meant that all power was indeed usable.

The bodywork was a closed coupe designed by the famous Paolo Dallara and featuring retractable headlamps at the leading edge of the now typical flat curve of the Italian sports car.

One must remember that this all occurred in 1963, 20 years before anything built in the U.S. – that is other than the Chevrolet Corvette – featured similarly clean aerodynamic lines.

But the first Lamborghini was a one-off for the men who built tractors, and although he went on to build about 200 of these cars over the next two years; it was by no means accepted as a supercar, at the time.

Indeed it took until 1965, at the world famous Turin Motor Show, that Lamborghini himself crossed the dividing line between the rich man’s toy and the specialist motorcar maker.

Originally a Dallara inspired spyder, the Miura T400 which went into production for the coming 1966model year was a mid-engined coupe with a slightly larger, four liter version of the ohc V12 slung transversely behind the two seats, driving the rear wheels by spur gears. This time

Lamborghini built his own gearboxes and rear axles, the frame was a box section affair beneath the monococque body. The whole lot, in the end, weighed in at 2700 lbs.

The Lamborghini Factory

And because of his frustration with Ferrari cars he built a car that was better from the Ferraris. He built a state of the art automotive factory in the small village of Sant’Agata. And his automotive engineer was Giotto Bizzarrini who worked with Ferrari before. The tractor business also faced hard times during the early 70’s that led Lamborghini to sell his controlling interest of Automobili Lamborghini SpA to a Swiss industrialist. When the oil crisis came his problems worsened and led him to sell his shares that were left. But after ten years Lamborghini declared bankruptcy because the development of the military truck style Cheetah was not selling well.

But in 1980 the company rose back and the reason for this was the introduction and popularity of Countach. It is an over the top, fully styled with angles and vents sports car. In 1987 the Lamborghini current models were sold to Chrysler. There was also another change of ownership in 1994.

The Aston Martin DB1

In 1948, the DB1 sports car made its debut at that year’s London Motor Show.

Previously known as the 2-Litre Sports, it was a two seater, using a tubular chassis, and powered by the companies’ own 2 litre engine. Only 15 were produced since it was felt that this classic sports car was underpowered.

The Aston Martin DB2

In 1950, the DB2 sports car was launched. It was a two seater, fixed head coupe.

Although the DB1 had a 2 litre, 4-cylinder, pushrod engine, the DB2 used a 2.6 litre, 6-cylinder, double overhead cam unit, derived from the Lagonda. A drop head coupe version was added later. An optional DB2 engine used two larger carburettors and a higher compression ratio.

The Aston Martin DB2/4

Based on the DB2 it replaced, the Mark 1 version of the DB2/4 was launched in 1953. It was offered as a two seater fixed head coupe, and drop head coupe, plus a 2+2 hatchback.

Initially, it used the same Lagonda engine as the DB2, but uprated to 125 bhp. However, later that year, the 2.9 litre version, developing 140 bhp, was used instead.

In 1955, the DB2/4 Mark 2 was introduced, which used a large valve, high compression Lagonda engine, developing 165 bhp.

In 1957, the Db2/4 Mark 2 was replaced by the DB2/4 Mark 3. Otherwise known as the DB Mark 3, it was available as a two seater fixed head coupe, a drop head coupe, and a 2+2 hatchback.

The standard “DBA” 2.9 litre Lagonda engine, fitted with two SU carburettors, developed 162 bhp. With an optional dual exhaust system, this would increase to 178 bhp.

The Aston Martin DB4

In 1958, the DB4 sports car was introduced at the London Motor Show, and caused a sensation. It was available as a two seater fixed head coupe, a drop head coupe, and a 2+2 hatchback.

The DB4 had a restyled body, using a tubular frame, and with a 3.7 litre, twin overhead cam, straight 6-cylinder engine, with two SU carburettors. The DB4 convertible appeared in 1962.

The Volkswagen Group
